The purpose of our study was to investigate the correlation between structural macular changes revealed on swept source optical coherence tomography (OCT) and retinal microvascular abnormalities detected by OCT angiography (OCTA) in patients with retinal vein occlusion (RVO).

Patients et Methodes
We conducted a prospective, observational cross-sectional study including patients with unilateral RVO. 4,5 x 4,5 mm OCTA images were performed for assessment of qualitative and quantitative microvascular changes in the superficial and deep capillary plexus. Central macular thickness (CMT) and the presence of ellipsoid zone disruption were also recorded using OCT.
Résultats
Eleven eyes with central RVO and 24 with branch RVO were enrolled. Ellipsoid zone disruption was significantly correlated to decreased deep vascular density (p=0,048), a larger and disrupted superficial foveal avascular zone (p=0,006) and poor visual acuity (r= -0,68; p<0,001). Increased CMT was associated with the presence of deep collateral vessel formation (p=0,024), deep cystoid spaces (p=0,002), superficial microaneurysms (p=0,01), foveal avascular zone enlargement (p=0,036) and impaired visual acuity (r=-0,354; p=0,035).
Discussion
OCTA is a novel, non invasive tool offering qualitative and quantitative parameters of macular microvasculature.
Conclusion
OCTA could improve our understanding of the outer retinal disruption and the formation of macular edema in RVO.
